Lesson 1: Balls, Trees, and Fruit (Objects, Position, and Perspective)

Note: It is recommended to keep a plain notebook, sketchpad, or binder to hold the exercise work described in this text. Avoid using much method or giving definite directions for this year. Simply show how by example and encourage earnest effort. Talk little, and draw much.

In this lesson, students review the concepts of left, right, near, far, and the rest line, as learned in Augsburg's First Year Drawing course.

Instructors show the image of the balls and apple, and ask children to answer the following.

  2. Which ball is farthest right?
  3. Which ball is nearest the viewer?
  4. Which ball is farthest back from the viewer?
  5. Which three balls are the same distance back as the apple?

  3. Which fruit is farthest left?
  4. Which fruit is farthest right?
